Brown admits he won't be a leader

WASHINGTON, Jan. 3 -- First District Rep. Henry Brown, R-S.C., admitted to The Post and Courier that he wouldn't be a key leader in Congress. Instead, he said he'd go along with others.

"I think that I'm a team player," Brown told reporter Steve Piacente after being sworn in on Jan. 3, 2001.

"Unless it's completely contrary to my line of thinking, I won't go against the leadership," he said.

Brown, who is the nation's oldest freshman House member at age 65, also admitted that he wouldn't be out front on issues.

"I'm not one for controversy," he said. "I'm not a power player, and I don't believe in running roughshod over
somebody just because you've got the leverage to do so.

Brown will serve on the transportation, budget and veterans' affairs committees during his first term as Charleston's congressman.

On the veterans' affairs panel, Brown said he would work toward fulfilling a campaign pledge to make certain veterans receive the lifelong health care they were promised when they joined the military.

"I'm confused as to why we need a minimum wage."
