Brown is "hands off " on education

WASHINGTON, Jan. 26 -- First District Rep. Henry Brown, R-S.C., indicated he supported a "hands off" approach to education -- a reaction that education advocates said was surprising because the state's schools were the worst in the nation.

According to a Jan. 27 story in The Post and Courier, Brown said he "does not think the federal government will become too intrusive in educational affairs that are the province of state and local governments."

"I don't sense from the president that he's trying to take control of the school districts," said Brown, who has taken college courses but does not have a college degree. "I think he's trying to provide tools to help."

As a state representative in South Carolina, Brown voted against dozens of education measures designed to decrease class size, build more schools and create better environments for teachers.
