Brown slams national environmental group

WASHINGTON, Feb. 8-- When The Post and Courier reported today the National Audubon Society says Cape Romain Wildlife Refuge is threatened, 1st District Rep. Henry Brown put his foot in his mouth.

He appeared to slam the Audubon Society, one of the nation's most respected environmental groups. Throughout his legislative career, Brown has racked up one of South Carolina's worst environmental records, according to another group, the Sierra Club.

Brown told the paper that the bottom line in addressing what's happening at Cape Romain must be ""peaceful co-existence
between the extreme environmentalists and those who would destroy the resources.

"I don't know that there's any scientific evidence that warrants further protections at Cape Romain," he said.

The National Audobon Society -- extreme environmentalists?

"I don't know that there's any scientific evidence that warrants further protections at Cape Romain."

-- Henry Brown, responding to a Feb. 8 story in which the National Audobon Society said Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge was one of the 10 most threatened refuges in the country. Also in the story, Brown implied Audobon members were "extreme environmentalists."
