Latest news... Brown denies he's a "wimp"
for leaving
Critics say he's a "Profile in Courage" WASHINGTON, Oct. 24 -- U.S. Rep. Henry Brown is upset that people think he and his House colleagues are "wimps" for adjourning last week when anthrax was discovered in the U.S. Senate - - several blocks away. "Some of the media are taking it as a joke that we went home," 1st District Rep. Brown, R-S.C., told The Post and Courier Tuesday. "It's not a joke." Charleston radio stations and New York newspapers have criticized House members for leaving last week as the Senate stayed in session. "Regardless of all of the whining and naysaying now, it's clear Brown and his colleagues turned tail and ran," said Brown critic Andy Brack. "Their actions were just what Osama Bin Laden wants. It appears they're examples of what Sen. John McCain observed - - real "profiles in courage." U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn has criticized the House for adjourning early. "I didn't think it was the right thing to do at the time," told The Post and Courier. "I still don't think it was the right thing to do if if I were calling the shots, it would have been a different headline." But Brown sticks to his guns by saying it's unfair to paint House members as "chicken" or "Like we jumped ship." "It's not a time to run down elected officials, particularly when we're trying to do the best we can for this country," he told the paper. Brown's office hasn't processed or opened mail since Oct. 12. To reach him by e-mail, go to: http://www.house.gov/henrybrown. His Washington office number is 202-225-3176. |
