Batchelder says Brown doesn't understand trade
Question's 66-year-old's commitment to district

Batchelder press release, 1/17/02

First District Congressional candidate, Bob Batchelder of Myrtle Beach , today reemphasized his opposition to fast track authority which the US Senate will soon vote on and which the House has already approved .

"This week's announcement that yet another manufacturing plant, Cooper Wiring in Georgetown is closing its doors clearly indicates the problems with current trade policies. It's very disturbing to me that my opponent, Congressman Henry Brown has voted to support these policies by voting to give more trade authority to the President and also with his support of free trade with China.

"Clearly he does not understand the ramifications of his votes on the industries and jobs in his District and in the greater scheme of things , the U.S."

This closure brings current year manufacturing based job losses in Georgetown and Horry Counties to 2,000, statewide losses to over 22,000 and nationally the losses exceed one million manufacturing jobs. Most of these jobs have been relocated to Mexico and China .

"It is one thing to support jobs in the District that rely on trade but not at the expense on an entire industry. A Congressman's duty is not only to his District but to his country as well. My policy will be to push for renegotiation of past trade policies and eliminate fast track authority. Let Congress do its Constitutionally mandated job of regulating trade. I would also favor not allowing countries like China an open door to our markets without a yearly review and a hard look at our immigration policy which allows illegally aliens to work and play without having to pay for any of the massive amounts of services they consume. Its time to start protecting American jobs and Americas borders."
