Batchelder criticizes Brown's pay raise, globe-trotting
Announces he'll challenge the 66-year-old in GOP primary

Batchelder press release, 4/15/02

MYRTLE BEACH -- Bob Batchelder of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is announcing today that he will formally file to run for Congress from the 1'st Congressional District tomorrow morning (April 16th ) in Columbia.

Says Batchelder, "I do not believe Henry Brown has represented the people's interests. While we both completely support the President's fight against terrorism, my opponent has voted against the people's call for real Campaign Finance reform and against fair trade and local industry by voting to give the President the power to negotiate even more detrimental trade agreements than we have now.

"At the same time, he has voted himself pay raises, jumped onto the pork barrel band wagon and traveled the globe on the backs of the taxpayer. I believe this is an abuse of the office and just plain old 'politics as usual'.

"Issues I will work hard for continue to be the same ones I have worked for in the past: continued reform in our campaign finance laws, fair trade agreements that don't trade away American industrial and manufacturing jobs, and better control over our immigration system. I will also continue to push for Social Security Reform and better
prescription benefits for our senior citizens. With support and encouragement from my family, my friend former Congressman Mark Sanford and others in the party who believe in my ability to add to the political debate I believe I offer a better choice to the voters and look forward to representing them if elected.

My pledge to the voters is to never abuse the office I seek and to serve with the highest degree of ethics and integrity. I believe both my business background and my close, personal, daily contact with the voters best prepares me to represent them."
