Elitist Brown thinks he's above scrutiny, opponent says
Challenger says Brown's a non-leader good-old-boy

MAY 26, 2002 -- U.S. Rep. Henry Brown seems to think the good-old-boy system is just fine -- for him.

In a May 25 story on his race with GOP challenger Bob Batchelder of Conway, elitist Brown criticized his opponent for wanting to serve the public.

""I've got 20 years of public service," the smug Brown told The State. "He's never served."

In a Saturday statement, Batchelder criticized Brown's quote.

"That's exactly the problem," said Batchelder, who faces Brown in the June 11 GOP primary. ""It's time for new blood and new ideas.

"Henry is from the old school of `politics as usual' that just doesn't work today. He holds himself above scrutiny and is afraid to come out and debate the issues. He admits to letting others dictate his votes. He believes its ok to spend millions of federal dollars on special interest projects. He forgets that somebody has to pay for his excesses."

Batchelder "takes issue with nearly every major vote Brown has cast in Congress and says he would be more careful with taxpayers' money," The State reported.

"All he does is follow along with what the Republican leadership wants him to do," said Batchelder, a manager at a Winn-Dixie in Conway.

Batchelder said he would have voted for the Bush tax cuts but, unlike Brown, would also have pushed for spending cuts to offset them. He called the $190 billion farm subsidy bill that Brown supported this year a "corporate welfare bailout."

Batchelder also criticizes Brown's vote to widen the president's authority to negotiate trade agreements. Those agreements cost South Carolinians jobs, Batchelder said.

"We cannot afford Henry Brown's kind of non-leadership."
