Brown votes for special interests, against environment
Group says congressman gets a failing public interest grade

JUNE 4, 2002 -- U.S. Rep. Henry Brown consistently votes against the public interest, according to a new 2001 voting scorecard offered by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.

Brown only scored 10 out of 100 in public interest votes, according to the organization. He voted against clean air and water, for drilling in the pristine Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, for dirty energy legislation, against improving fuel economy in cars, for doubling contribution limits and for weakening consumer protections. (Votes are listed below.)

"We are particularly disappointed in the 170 members who consistently voted to put special interests before public health and safety and scored at or below 10 percent," a PIRG spokesman said.

The group analyzed 20 House votes on votes it defined in the public interest. Click here to see all of the votes. Key votes included:

1. Vote to restore funds to the Environmental Protection Agency for enforcement for violations to the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act. Brown: NO. (Roll call vote #289, 7/27/01)

2. Vote to reduce arsenic in drinking water. Brown: NO. (Roll call vote #288. 7/27/01)

3. Votes to oppose drilling in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Brown: NO. (Roll call votes #316, 317, 8/1/01).

4. Vote to increase auto fuel efficiency standards. Brown: NO. (Roll call vote #311, 8/1/01).

5. Vote to increase funding for farmland conservation. Brown: NO. (Roll call vote #366, 10/4/01).

6. Vote to oppose drilling off the Florida coast. Brown: NO. (Roll call vote #181, 6/21/01

7. Vote to weaken Patients' Bill of Rights. Brown: YES. (Roll call vote #329, 8/2/01).

8. Vote to weaken consumer rights. Brown: YES. (Roll call vote #62, 3/13/02).

9. Vote to stop anti-consumer, anti-environmental trade agreements. Brown: NO. (Roll call vote #481, 12/6/01).
