Brown: Racing to the bottom
Congressman gets very low ratings on people's business
It's not tough to figure out what Washington insiders think of how Rep. Henry Brown is doing in Congress. It's described by one word: poorly.
You can see it in his voting record and ratings by various groups:
Score: 7 percent. The League of Conservation Voters gave Brown a grade of 7 out of 100 for anti-environment votes to send jobs outside of America and to drill for oil in the pristine Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Brown also voted against provisions to toughen fuel efficiency. He voted with industry interests to weaken proposed mining reforms and to allow oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and at national monuments.
Score: 18 percent. The Children's Defense Fund gave Brown a failing grade in votes to protect America's children. Among the ways he failed were votes to put tax cuts before programs to help children, to give tax cuts to very rich people, against tax cuts for lower- and moderate-class Americans, and against Head Start funding improvements.
Score: 10 percent. The U.S. Public Interest Research Group said Brown consistently votes against the public interest as highlighted in his 10 percent failing score. Among the ways he failed the public were votes against cutting arsenic levels in drinking water, against conserving farmland and against improving voter access at the polls. He also voted for approving genetically-engineered fish and a weak, pro-business version of a patient's bill of rights.
Score: 9 percent. Brown voted for a program that would deny Hispanic children the chance to achieve academic success and to underfund programs that help Latinos just to give tax cuts to the rich, according to the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda.
